Meraner Land: holidays at the Val d’Ultimo near Merano

Val d’Ultimo extends along the south eastern alpine slope of Merano, in a position, which is rather isolated from the rest of Burgraviato. The isolated position could be the reason for the villages name Val d’Ultimo, from the Latin “ultima vallis” (last valley).

The entire landscape, which can be admired from these sunny slopes is definitely enchanting. Huge vineyards, fruit gardens and flower fields create an ideal setting for endless paths, hence, the ideal destination for those who want to enjoy unforgettable excursions in direct contact with nature.

During winter time the landscape transforms into a paradise for skiers and for winter sports in general.
This enchanting valley is divided into four villages. The biggest centre is represented by San Pancrazio village. It is located at the entrance to the Val d’Ultimo valley at 736 m above sea level. The village has approximately 1,600 inhabitants and lots to offer to visitors: the beautiful Parish Church, the San Sebastiano chapel dating back to the 14th Century, the remains of Eschenlohe Castle and in particular the famous house on the stone, which is the only house that survived the flooding of the Valsura due to its favourable position on a gigantic stone. We further recommend a visit to the close fraction of Sant’Elena, where you can admire a very old chapel.

Further on we find the villages of Santa Valburga, San Nicolò and Santa Gertrude, which together form the Ultimo community. These villages are located in a particularly favourable position from a climatic point of view, since the entire area is protected by the north winds. Visitors can enjoy a view over vast forests, artificial lakes and the surrounding mountains. The area offers many attractions. First of all we recommend the famous Val d'Ultimo Museum located in San Nicolò. The structure was opened to the public in 1973 after several years of work. It holds precious items from our rural civilization, popular art and explains the ancient traditions of this valley. At the inside you can admire tools for working, objects of common use, furniture and the farmers’ clothes in the olden days.

We also recommend a visit to San Nicolò and Santa Gertrude Parish Churches, without forgetting to admire the millennium larches in Santa Gertrude. These larches are over 2000 years old and represent a natural monument of the Val d’Ultimo valley, an original attraction for all tourists and the pride of all inhabitants.
