Tirolo is located at a vast site above the town of Merano at 596 metres above sea level. It is proud to lay claim to being the most ancient settlement of the entire Burgraviato region.
Tirolo holds many ancient manor residences, but also numerous farms. Up to date Tirolo has been able to maintain this original beauty, while developing into a touristic centre.
The leisure time and sports options in this village are endless. Here you find various routes for cyclists and mountain bikers, and fitness paths for those who like keeping fit outside in the pure air and in unspoilt nature. Those who like cooling down in a swimming pool have the choice between the public swimming pool and many private and indoor swimming pools. A day of golf or mini golf in the immediate surroundings provides a challenge for the entire family. Of course we can’t mention everything that Tirolo has to offer, but as always, we recommend a stay in this beautiful location and to find out for yourself....you will not be disappointed.
However, from a cultural point of view you will also be occupied in Tirolo. First of all we have to mention the famous Tirolo Castle, which was constructed upon the orders of the Counts of Tirolo in the 6th Century. It provided the governmental seat up to the end of the rule of Margareta Maultasch (1363). In its interior you can admire precious pieces of art, which enchant all visitors. The famous Bird Care Centre is also located directly at the castle. The aim of this centre is to reintroduce injured and defenceless birds into their natural ambience.
Other cultural spots in Tirolo are provided by the San Pietro Parish Church with Carolingian frescos and the Parish Church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista.
Also worth a visit are the interesting Agricultural Museum and the Centre of Studies on Ezra Pound located at the magnificent Fontana Castle. If you want to take enjoyable walks through a beautiful flower garden you can visit the beautiful botanic garden in Trauttmanssdorff Castle or go on the amazing Falkner walk.
