Due to its enviable position only about 5 km from Merano amidst a beautiful landscape, and in particular due to the friendliness of the inhabitants, Scena has become a very renowned and frequently visited touristic destination over the past few decades. Scena is located at Merano’s southern slope in one of the sunniest and most beautiful areas around Merano in terms of climate. The town is located 600 m above sea level and is surrounded by vineyards and fruit gardens, which provide a beautiful setting.
In this modern touristic centre you can enjoy numerous walks along paths decorated by coloured and scented flowers. However, the town also disposes of a public swimming pool, tennis courts and a football pitch and in winter time they even provide an ice-skating rink, thus you can also practice various sports. In addition to the natural beauties, Scena has also a lot to offer from a cultural point of view.
You will be amazed by the extraordinary beauty and the majesty of Scena Castle. It was constructed in approximately 1350 and was bought by Archduke Giovanni d’Austria in 1845, who used to love this area. The Archduke then transferred the castle to the Counts of Merano, who have owned it up to date. At the inside of the castle you can admire a vast collection of ancient arms and beautiful rooms in Renaissance style with many precious paintings.
Another of Scena’s symbols is the famous Mausoleum, which was constructed in neo-Gothic style in 1869. The Mausoleum magnificently juts out beside the San Giorgio parish church and provides the grave for Archduke Giovanni d’Austria and his family.
Other sites to visit are the San Giorgio Church dating back to Roman times, the Parish Church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, which also dates back to Roman times and was restructured in 1500 and which holds a series of precious frescos.
