Avelengo is located only 10 kilometres from the famous thermal town of Merano. It is located on a fascinating plateau, which makes even the laziest tourist want to take one of the many excursions in summer or in winter time.
With its 600 inhabitants the village expresses the genuine hospitality typical for this area, which will enchant all visitors.
The symbols of the village are the Avelengo horses, famous and renowned throughout the entire world. These robust and resistant animals with a particular ductile and gentle character descend from a cross-breed of Arabian stallions which were imported during the times of the crusades, and local horses. The breeds of these animals can be found in the whole of South Tyrol, but they are especially numerous on the Avelengo plateau, being their traditional home.
We recommend an excursion to all visitors and lovers of nature on one of these horses. Ride through forests or through the fields surrounded by imposing mountains, which provide this village with a particular flair. Nobody will be disappointed.
Amongst the sites to visit is definitely the Santa Caterina church, which origins from the 13th century and which can only be admired through an opening at the entrance door. Inside you find splendid frescos from 1400 and other precious cultural objects.
Other places of interest in this area are the Gothic tabernacle, which dates back to the period of the plague and is located at the entrance road to the Nusser farm, and the prehistoric porphyry relief on the external wall of the San Giovanni parish church.
Last but not least Falzeben, a splendid fraction of Avelengo at 1,621 metres above sea level. This location is renowned in summer and winter and provides a true paradise for skiers, since it is directly connected with the Merano 2000 ski resort. The village further offers an exhibition of precious stones and minerals. Verano is a beautiful small village at 1,200 metres above sea level with a rather mild and sunny climate from spring until the end of autumn.
The Adige Valley can be reached by cable car or via a small road, which is open in summer and in winter time.
Here you can completely enjoy the unspoilt nature and go for relaxing and romantic walks along the various paths in this area. The paths are accessible all year round.
However, skiing reigns the village in winter time. Only a few kilometres from the village will you find the cable cars to the Merano 2000 skiing paradise. In Verano itself you can cross-country ski and enjoy the beautiful winter landscape.
The Red Stones of Verano, volcanic stones with a round shape, are unique and very interesting. From the stones you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view.
As a famous winter paradise for skiers and tobogganists, Merano 2000 offers the most varied opportunities to visitors. Thanks to its 36 km of perfectly snowed-in and groomed slopes and with the help of numerous and modern lift facilities (4 chairlifts, two cable cars, a ski lift and a baby lift for children), this skiing resort can guarantee enjoyable and varied downhill runs and comfortable ascents without long and bothersome queues.
